Today is the 6 year anniversary of Nancy and I starting dating.
Since then, we’ve graduated high school, gone to college, moved in together and lived in 4 different places, dealt with my dad dying, graduated college, gotten a dog and a cat, bought a house, started careers, gotten married, gotten pregnant, had a miscarriage, gotten pregnant again, dealt with a rough pregnancy, dealt with natural childbirth, and here we are 2 months after Charlie was born. Hopefully it’s time to slow down now? No? Dang.
Another year, another blog redo…
For the last year, Mike The Coder has been hosted on Chyrp, a nice and nimble little self-hosted blogging platform that dips into the tumblelog side of things (different post types, auto-posting of other websites stuff, etc.). Then, much to my dismay, Alex announced that he was done maintaining Chyrp (I’d link to the blog post but the site seems to be down). That alone doesn’t warrant a switch, since things were working fine as they were, but it made the antsy side of me kick in.
So now I’m on Tumblr, just because it’s the closest thing to Chyrp and I’m ready to try something hosted for once. The benefits of Tumblr over something like Chyrp are many:
- Can email or IM in posts
- Can call in audio posts using a phone
- Easy Disqus integration
- Lots of readily available themes
- All the other stuff that comes with using a popular platform
So holler if you spot any problems. I manually ported over all the posts worth porting (skipped the twitter statuses and pointless pics, etc.).
What not to say to soon-to-be parents
As a dad to be, I’m more or less a trained expert on this now.
Aren’t you SO EXCITED?!?!
Sure, we’re excited. We’re also nervous and stressed and paranoid and freaking tired of people asking if we’re excited.
(To the mom) Oh, you’re feeling [insert some horrible pregnancy related condition here]? Well just try [insert stupid home remedy or food here]! It works wonders!
No it doesn’t. Go away.
Oh, you’re going to name it [insert name here]? Well, what about [insert completely different name here]? I like that a lot better.
Hey, great! Let’s drop the name we love and decided on in favor of a random name from a stranger!
[Person starts rubbing the mom’s belly]
Good idea! Here, let me pick your nose.
[Upon seeing a random kid misbehaving] You better get used to that now! You’ve got one on the way!
WTF! I do?! And you’re telling me kids are bad sometimes? I want out!
Were you trying or was it an accident?
Don’t know what to say about this one. It’s just really really awkward to be asked that.
Are you going to have another one?
We were kind of hoping to have this one first, and then decide. Is that ok?
